UDAN – Regional Connectivity Scheme 2022

It is a part of the Prime Minister’s National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP), which was started back in the year 2016 with the aim of improving regional connectivity. The RCS UDAN was started to achieve the same objective by increasing the number of airports, facilitating affordable air transportation services, and stimulating regional air connectivity. 

Since it was launched in the year April 2017, it has been working for developing regional air routes and operationalizing a number of new airports in different states and union territories of India. It was launched by the Government of India and the Udan Scheme headed under the Ministry of Civil Aviation India

The Civil Aviation Ministry has set a target of developing 1000 regional air connecting routes. In addition, 50 unserved and underserved airports, which include five heliports, are part of the UDAN Scheme, and by 2024, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) aims to make this number 100.

There is a bidding process for the selection of airlines to be a part of this scheme, and the government has fixed a 10-year plan for its implementation. The duration can also be increased later. Also, the government has allocated a budget of Rs 450 billion for this scheme.

Central Government

  • Value Gap Funding (VGF) to the airlines to subsidise the fair cost.
  • Concession on ticket-related taxes.
  • Flight’s code sharing.

State Government

  • Reducing the GST to 1%.
  • Improving fueling infrastructure by coordinating with oil companies.
  • 20 % VG.
  • Providing free security personnel and land for airport development.
  • Supplying water, electricity, etc., at cheap rates.

Airport Operators

  • No charge for parking, landing, storage, etc.
  • Nil Terminal Navigation Landing Charge.
  • 42.4% discount on UDAN-RCS flight’s Route Navigation and Facilitation Charge (RNFC).
